Roulette Variations
A roulette table may have five, six, or seven sets of chips or "wheelchecks." Each set has a different color, so there is one set for each player. Normally, all chips have the same value, although many casinos have high-value chips that can be used at any gaming table.

European Roulette
When the winning number comes up, the winnings may be as much as 35 times the bet which is played on one, two, three, four, six, twelve, twenty-four numbers, or on single bets. These may be on red, black, even, odd, passe or manque. If the ball falls into the 0 compartment, the single bets lose half their value, unless the player opts to wait for the next throw, hoping to come up a winner.

English Roulette
This is a variation of European roulette. As in European roulette, the wheel has 37 sections numbered from 0 to 36. Winning bets are paid out in the same way. However, in English Roulette, as many as nine players can sit at the table To make betting easier, three additional sections are on the table. These are "tiers" (6 split bets), "orphelins" (4 split bets and 1 straight-up bet), and "voisins" (playing a specific group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel adjacent to the 0 with 5 split bets, 1 street bet and 1 corner bet).

American Roulette (Roulette Américaine)
American roulette is faster than the European variety. In this game, a double zero compartment is added, so the configuration of the table and the numbered sections of the wheel change. This means the consecutive numbers are situated directly opposite one other. Another difference here is that the player gets to decide on the value of the colored chips and informs the croupier of his decision when he buys the chips. The player can win from as much as 35 times the amount of the bet according to the stakes. This depends on whether the gambler plays single bets (red, black, even, odd, passe, or manque), double bets (twelves or columns), or 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 numbers. If the ball falls into the 0 or the 00, only the winning bets on these numbers will be paid. The player odds in French roulette are the same as in European roulette (only one zero) and better than the odds in American roulette (two zeros). The players loose only 50% of their even-money bets when the outcome is zero, known as the 'La Partage' rule. The object of the game is still the same - to predict which number out of possible 37 the ball will land on. And of course, they speak French. Below are the English and equivalent French terms for the various roulette bets:

Inside bets

  • One number Straight up = En plein
  • Two numbers Split Bet = Cheval
  • Three numbers Street Bet = Transversale
  • Four numbers Corner = Carre
  • Six numbers Line Bet = Sixainne

Outside bets

  • Twelve numbers Column = Colonne
  • Twelve numbers Dozen = Douzaine
  • Red or Black = Rouge, Noir
  • Even or Odd = Pair, Impair
  • Low or High numbers = Manque, Passe
